Eco Stars

How it works

The Eco Stars Fleet Recognition Scheme was developed for the South Yorkshire Transport Plan Air Quality Steering Group, and launched in 2009, as part of a regional Air Quality Initiative.

More details

Commercial vehicles now make a significant contribution to local emissions in terms of pollutants, and greenhouse gas emissions, and there are a number of Air Quality Management Areas within South Yorkshire.

Eco Stars rates individual vehicles and a fleets overall road transport operation using star rating criteria, to recognise levels of operational and environmental performance.

Each member signing up to the scheme will receive tailor-made support to ensure that their fleet is running as efficiently and economically as possible to help them progress to higher rating.

Eco Stars is a free scheme aimed at improving fuel efficiency, saving money and reducing emissions.

It is an accreditation scheme aimed at HGV, Bus and Coach Fleet Operators with no limit to the amount of vehicles per company that can be included.

Eco Stars schemes are open to all operators of Commercial Goods (Trucks and Vans) and Passenger Transport (Buses, Coaches and Minibuses) Vehicle Fleets.  Eco Stars welcomes operators of all sizes including small independent operators, through to national and international companies. These include both the Public and Private Sector (own account, hire and reward, retail, haulage, industrial, parcels, community transport, local registered bus services and longer distance coach services) and can include Local Authority’s own fleets.

Benefits

  • Save up to £2,600 per vehicle – For an operator with 10 vehicles this equates to a saving of one whole tanker of diesel.
  • Improve your fuel efficiency - By implementing the key measures recommended by ECO Stars, a typical commercial vehicle operator could expect to reduce fuel consumption at least 5% in the first year.
  • Reduce your environmental impact - A typical van operator could see its annual output of carbon dioxide fall by six tonnes per year.
  • Reductions in other toxic emissions are possible.
  • Raised profile of operators as environmentally responsible service providers.
  • A free Scheme

My experience

Nigel Willott, National Transport Manager for DHL

“Eco Stars is a perfect fit with both DHL’s and B&Q’s environmental philosophies and business values of improving efficiency and reducing costs.” The occasion was marked with the presentation of a special award by Ann Beddoes, South Yorkshire Eco Stars Scheme Manager.

Michelle Thomas B&Q

“We are delighted to become the 50th membership of ECO stars in South Yorkshire, and very proud to have been awarded the highest possible rating from the outset. With a fleet travelling in excess of 3 million miles per year, every step we can take to reduce our fuel consumption and emissions benefits the local community.”

Is it for you?

Eco Stars schemes are open to all operators of Commercial Goods (Trucks and Vans) and Passenger Transport (Buses, Coaches and Minibuses) Vehicle Fleets. Eco Stars welcomes operators of all sizes including small independent operators, through to national and international companies. These include both the Public and Private Sector (own account, hire and reward, retail, haulage, industrial, parcels, community transport, local registered bus services and longer distance coach services) and can include Local Authority’s own fleets.

In addition to the fleet operators themselves, Eco Stars scheme also has a target audience in local businesses which do not actually operate their own fleets, but are consignors (i.e. shippers) or consignees (i.e. receivers) of goods, or are significant users of passenger transport services.

Vehicle fleets must be either based in the geographical area covered by the scheme, or have a significant number of vehicles operating within the area.
